The 13th London (The Kensingtons) battalion had arrived in France in November 1914 and been attached to 25 Brigade8th Division. During the winter of 1914-1915 they were in and out of the front line around Laventie and Fauquissart, to the south of Armentieres from where they were finally relieved on 1st March, 1915.

They moved back to an area called Francas Hill, but being out of the front line rarely guaranteed safety. On the night of 4th/5th March the battalion supplied a four hundred and fifty strong Working Party for trench digging duties. The enemy snipers were very active that night and claimed ten victims, two killed and eight wounded. Stanley Carr was one of those killed.
